EXTRADITION

  • The transfer of an accused from one state or country to place the accused on trial.

EXAMPLES

  • The revival of the extradition treaty with Spain forced criminals from the UK to look for somewhere else to hide.
  • Specialty doctrine- requires that an extradited defendant be tried for the crimes on which extradition was granted, not another.
  • Extradition between nations is usually based on a treaty between the country where the accused is currently located and the country looking to place the accused on trial.

  • Rafael Esquivel accused of receiving bribes worth millions of dollars with the sale of marketing rights to the copa America tournaments. (Extradited from US to Switzerland)
