Background Info

  • almost half the world lives on less than 2.50 per day
  • 27-28% of all of the world's children are starving
  • highest concentration of poverty is in India and developing countries
  • Their population is growing rapidly
  • They don't have the technologies to keep up with the population

Golden Rice

  • A genetically modified form of rice that adds Vitamin A
  • Gives Vitamin A to those where it isn't very plentiful
  • Helps cure Vitamin A deficiency
  • Many pregnant women and children have Vitamin A deficiency

Benefits of GMO's

  • GM pesticides can save India's sole source of income
  • Can clean impure seeds and plants ( High resistance plants)
  • Help sustain food production in areas with poor resources
  • Can add extra nutrients to plants
  • Can increase food production

The other side

  • "GMOs are bad for your health"
  • There is no evidence of long term effects
  • "a genetically modified plant has lower nutrition value"
  • There are plants that have certain nutritional values added EX: golden rice
  • "Can increase allergic reactions": No confirmed cases
