chap. 1-4

• Patty begins her journey in Springfield, Illinois. Her family is packed and ready to go.

Chap. 5-13

• Things are going smoothly. They have enough supplies. But when they hear about it, they know they won't last long in the Salt Desert.

Chap. 14

• They are struggling to cross the Salt Desert. Their supplies are running low. They do not know if they will make it.

Chap. 15 and 16

• They arrive at Old Mary's river and the Truckee. Mr. Reed says there are no more deserts to cross.

Chap. 17 and 18

• They arrive at the Sierra Nevada. There are HUGE blizzards. Barely anyone survives.

Chap. 19

• Patty's family finally arrives at Sutter's Fort. Over the years, she becomes a parent, and at last, a grandparent.
