FALL OF THE RUSSIANS

INITIAL CAUSES

  • Russia suffered series defeats during the Crimean war
  • They now had a poor military and inadequate troops after failed conquests
  • Displayed the influence and might of western Europe over Russia
  • The autocracy began to initiate reforms for political and economic systems
  • Russia was a multiethnic and multinational state causing tension

INDUSTRIALIZATION

  • After Crimean war, government started reforms for freeing the serfs
  • Serf emancipation was used to stimulate economic and industrial growth
  • This more capitalist system was formed by Sergei Witte, a minister of finance
  • Serfs transitioned from agricultural practices to factory work
  • Serfs slowly became discontent due to poor environments and excessively low pay

PROTEST, REPRESSION, AND REVOLT

  • Protests became from many serf workers who felt the sting of unfair captialism
  • Organizations like intelligentsia promoted political reform and less autocracy
  • The current regime began to repress these protests, but it backfired
  • Groups like the Land and Freedom party caused revolutionary turmoil
  • Ended the Tsarist regime with the death of Nicholas || and Russian Empire
