Slide Notes

Hi, I am Lisa Falk and this is my FBA Final Project for SPED 471. I used the presentation app Haiku Deck for this assignment. I prefer power point but I think its always a good idea to try new technology. This app has kind of been a pain because it's not great at saving slides for playback and special effects are very limited. But, I think it looks clean and sharp.

If some slides don't show up after uploading, I am sorry, I did my best and no time to try a different app.

Proactive Classroom Management

and Developing PBIS Plans
This presentation was designed with the idea that it could be used for instructing new SPED teachers, Para Educators, or for a Professional Development seminar. The focus of this presentation is "Proactive Classroom Management and Developing PBIS Plans for the classroom. Almost to the end of this presentation are some helpful videos from educational professionals regarding Tiered Behavior Interventions, PBIS, being Proactive Classroom management and Positive Praise.

At the Conclusion of this presentation is my reflection on SPED 471.

I hope you enjoy this and thank you for your attention.

Be Proactive

The 1st Step in a Positive Behavior Intervention Plan
One components of an effective PBIS plan is to be Proactive in your classroom management and having all your tools in your tool belt ready to go on day one.

Most Important Proactive Step

Get to know students and built relationship foundation!
The first and most important proactive step in PBIS is getting to know students and their families and building a relationship foundation. Neither positive behavior or progress in educational skills can be accomplished without it.

Proactive Steps

  • Avoid Triggers
  • Modify Curriculum and Instruction
  • Provide Structure
  • Baseline Data Collection
  • Set up FBA Team Meeting prior to start of school, for all new students, when there are concerns, bi-monthly to review
Here are several proactive steps teachers and support staff can utilize in order to manage behaviors in the classroom.

PBIS

and FBA Management
Now I will discuss PBIS and how to incorporate this with FBA Management

Keys

for effective FBA/PBIS
There are a number of Keys to effective FBA and PBIS. Here are a few that I feel are most important to keep in mind:

Classroom Management,

Social Supports

Strategies to teach, model and guide Positive Behavior

and Strategies for when a student has a behavior set back.

Classroom Environment

Calm, Organized, Comfortable , and Safe
First Impressions are important and the Classroom Environment will either make or break a students first impression on meet the teacher night or during the first week of school. Students need their learning environment to be calm, organized, and comfortable in order for them to feel safe.

Effective Classroom Management

  • Student Choices
  • 5-10 Second Compliance window/Use a visual timer
  • Classroom Jobs and Responsibilities
  • Visuals; Schedules, Rules, Routines, Student Jobs, Rewards, etc.
  • Keep Students Actively Engaged
  • Students/Classroom involved with classroom management
  • Students/Class need to discuss and practice expectations frequently
Effective Classroom Management is vital to FBA and PBIS
This includes
Student choices

Enough time for students to comply - use a timer will help

Provide students with classroom jobs, visuals such as rules, schedules, routines

Tangible rewards are needed - phase these out as students automatically follow expectations - when they stop asking about the rewards is a sign they don't need them anymore

Keeping students involved in the classroom management and learning is also important

Provide Social Supports

  • Positive an Appropriate Peer Role Models
  • Peer Mentors/Tutor Opportunities
  • Teacher Helper Opportunities
  • Teach Coping Skills/Curriculum
  • Transition Rewards and Supports
  • Adult Behavioral Interventionist Coaching and Supports in the classroom
Students need to learn appropriate social skills and it's important for teachers and staff to provide them with social supports

such as.....

Strategies to Increase Positive Behaviors

  • Teach/Model/Guide Communication skills
  • Teach Social Skills
  • Teach Problem Solving Skills
  • Teach Coping Skills
  • Teach Ignoring Strategies
Children with emotional or behavior challenges don't come into the classroom with knowledge or understanding of appropriate social skills and it's our job to teach, model and guide these important skills such as

Helpful Videos

PBIS, Interventions, Positive Behavior, and Praise
Here are a few videos I found that I thought were helpful for teachers and staff. The first video discusses PBIS, the next three are about PBIS Tier 1, 2 and 3 interventions, next is about teaching positive behavior and the last one is about the importance of Positive Praise.

Just Because

We all need a good laugh!
These last two videos are from The Big Bang theory. They are related to Behavior Conditioning and just make me laugh every time I see them. I think we all need a good laugh every day.

Reflection on this class:
I took this class because I wanted to learn more about how to effectively manage children with behaviors in the classroom and additional information about FBA's and BIPs.
I feel that I have more knowledge about strategies and interventions to help children develop positive behaviors
and I will be able to apply these in my classroom.
I think I learn much better in a classroom setting than on-line because discussions are direct and I don't have to wait to get a response.

Just in case this last slide doesn't show up after uploading Here is my Reflection on this class
