FCI - History & Context @UJ April 2022

Published on Nov 28, 2015

I will give a rather personal discussion of how my collaborators, and I have used the FCI to understand issues in conceptual physics on classical mechanics courses. This includes a recent collaboration with colleagues at the Physics Department at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), of which I am visiting Senior Research Associate. I will give some history and context to UJ , and then hopefully be able to have an open discussion about current and future opportunities.

Lectures don't work

  • Physics majors don't understand classical mechanics - conceptually
  • Flipped classrooms more common
  • To improve student outcomes
  • Can teachers improve their andragogy?
  • Mazur - Peer Instruction

Peer Instruction

  • Mazur
  • Students get:
  • Rapid feedback
  • "Work" in peer groups
  • IE - Interactive Engagement

  • 30 minutes (depends)
  • pre and post test
  • COMPARE the normalised GAINs
  • Item by item analysis
  • Dominant misconceptions
