FEDERATION

• What is ‘federation’?
• What happened at Federation?

WHAT IS FEDERATION?

• When a group of states or colonies come together to create a government.
• Think about the example of classrooms in a school: each class gets to make its own decisions, but the Principal is in charge of all of them together.

WHAT HAPPENED AT FEDERATION?

• Australia became a country. We created our own government to make laws for us, instead of needing Britain to make them for us.
• A constitution was written, to set out the most important laws of the country, that all the others would be based off.
• There were votes held in every colony to ask the people if they wanted independence.

BEFORE FEDERATION

• What was Australia before Federation?
• What changed at Federation?
• Why did we want to be a country?

WHAT WAS AUSTRALIA BEFORE FEDERATION?

• It was a group of colonies, which are places that are settled and run by a different country
• While each of them had its own parliament, they could not make laws about things like trade, how to treat other countries, and who could come and go to the colonies.

• The colonies still answered to Britain, they had Governors appointed by the British Parliament who had tremendous power.
