PERSONAL LIFE

  • Born on February 3rd, 1480 in Portugal.
  • He died on April 27th. 1521 at the age of 41 in Cebu, Philippines.
  • He began serving the queen of Portugal at the age of 12.
  • His parents died when he was 10 years old.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Discovered the Strait of Magellan
  • First European to cross the Pacific Ocean
  • The expedition he went on uncovered information that confirmed the earth is a sphere
  • Set out from Spain with five ships to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands
  • He was in the Battle of Diu
  • He religiously studied the most recent navigation charts
  • While serving in battle, he was wounded which caused him to walk with a limp for the rest of his life

LAST YEARS

  • He entered the Strait of Magellan
  • He traded with Rajah Hamabon, the king of Homonhom Island
  • His Spanish crew got involved in a war and Magellan was killed in battle on April 27th, 1521
  • The remaining crew escaped and continued on towards the Spice Islands
