  • The cook coffee house is where Matilda lives
  • People come there to socialize
  • Eliza cooks there

  • The Oligives live there and they are a wealthy family who look down on the lower class
  • The Cooks went there trying to marry off Matilda

RIVER

  • Mattie fished there with Nathaniel
  • Waste was dumped into the river and it might have spread the disease.

AMERICAN REVOLUTION

  • The war between the American colonists and the British Empire
  • The colonists invented the grooved rifle and it had a much greater range and accuracy than the British musket
  • The colonists turned the tide of the war in a sneak attack during the winter
  • The colonists got the help of France and drove the British out of America

MATTIE

  • She is the main character of the book
  • She is turning into an adult in the book and becoming independent
  • She survived the yellow fever at Bush Hill

LUCILLE COOK

  • She is the mother of Mattie
  • She lost her husband and owns the Cook Coffee house
  • She contracts the yellow fever

GRANDFATHER COOK

  • He is a revolutionary war veteran
  • He fought under George Washington
  • He counteracted the yellow fever and recovered

ELIZA

  • She was a slave who bought her freedom
  • She cooks for the Cook Coffee house
  • She is Mattie's best friend
  • She is part of the Free African Society

GEORGE WASHINGTON

  • He was the commander of the colonial forces in the American Revolution
  • He was a plantation owner from Virginia
  • His favorite breakfast was hoecakes which are pancakes made with cornmeal and served with honey and syrup

SUFFERING

  • The theme suffering is that there is a lot of sadness and disparity in the city but you have to fight through it
  • Mattie has to suffer through sickness, hunger, losing loved ones, and many other things but she fights through them to find the happy things in life

SELF-RELIANCE

  • Self-reliance means not relying on others and being independent
  • Mattie has to learn to be self-reliant in the book because people that she use to rely on aren't there anymore
  • She is learning to be independent throughout the book

ACCOMPLISHING YOU DREAMS

  • It means that you cannot give up on your dreams and you have to keep on trying to accomplish them
  • Mattie never gives up on her dreams during the book and she keeps on trying to accomplish them even when the future looks bleak

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

  • Simile-A figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as
  • Metaphor-Comparing two things by using one kind of object or using in place of another to suggest the likeness between them

  • Hyperbole-Big exaggeration, usually with humor
  • Onomatopoeia-Naming a thing or an action by imitating the sound associated with it

  • Imagery-visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work.
  • Foreshadowing-important hints that an author drops to prepare reader for what is to come, and help the reader anticipate the outcome

  • Allusion-an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.
  • Alliteration-The repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables

  • Personification-Giving something human qualities
  • Symbol-a thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract.
