The theme suffering is that there is a lot of sadness and disparity in the city but you have to fight through it
Mattie has to suffer through sickness, hunger, losing loved ones, and many other things but she fights through them to find the happy things in life

Self-reliance means not relying on others and being independent
Mattie has to learn to be self-reliant in the book because people that she use to rely on aren't there anymore
She is learning to be independent throughout the book

ACCOMPLISHING YOU DREAMS
It means that you cannot give up on your dreams and you have to keep on trying to accomplish them
Mattie never gives up on her dreams during the book and she keeps on trying to accomplish them even when the future looks bleak
