PRESENTATION OUTLINE
FIBRODYSPLASIA OSSIFICANS PROGRESSIVA
It is believed that FOP is caused by a mutation in the ACVR1 gene, which is responsible to turning newborn cartilage into bone during childhood.
Throughout the life of someone with FOP, their muscles, tendons, and other tissue transforms into bone. This can be triggered faster by injury, surgery, and even immunization. An early sign of FOP is a malformed big toe.
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for FOP. However, the best prevention method, being most efficient during childhood, is simply avoiding bodily damage as to not trigger flare-ups. Gene therapy is also a promising treatment.
