FICTION TERMS

FICTION

  • a story that comes from the authors imagination
  • the story isn't true or real, but it can be based off of real events.

SHORT STORY

  • a book that is meant to be read in one sitting
  • usually part of many short stories in one book
  • short stories often have one idea in the plot

NOVEL

  • books that are longer and more harder to comprehend
  • often novels have multiple story lines

CHARACTERS

  • people, animals, or imaginary creatures in the book or story

CHARACTER TYPES

  • round: characters that are a major part of the storyline, and we gradually learn more about them as we read
  • flat: characters that have a very minor part of the storyline, often extras, who we never learn more about.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

  • physical description: what she/he looks like
  • action: what she/he does
  • thoughts: what she/he thinks
  • other opinions: what others think of she/he

SETTING

  • the description of where or when the character is
  • mood: the sensory detail of the character
  • time: what time season or year the character is
  • place: the description of where the setting is

PLOT

  • what happens in the storyline or the chain of events that happen

EXPOSITION

  • the introduction of the character
  • sets the stage, setting described, and conflict begins

RISING ACTION

  • the chain of events leading up to the climax

CLIMAX

  • the moment where the protagonist faces his conflict

FALLING ACTION/ RESOLUTION

  • the chain of events that lead to the end of the story or the resolution, the conflict getting solved

FORESHADOWING

  • hints to future events

CONFLICT

  • a problem that sets the plot in motion

SYMBOL

  • an object that is used to represent an idea
  • the reader must figure out

THEME

  • the hidden message behind the storyline or plot
  • reader has to analyze and interpret the story to figure it out
