FIGURATIVE LANGAUGE

ALLITERATION

  • two or more words of a word group with the same letter
  • Examples : She sell seashells at the seashore

ALLUSION

  • a figure of speech that makes a reference to, or a representation of, people, places, events, literary works, myths, or works of art.
  • Example : His nose gets longer when ever he talks

EXTENDED METAPHOR

  • a metaphor introduced and then further developed throughout all or part of a literary work, especially a poem.
  • Example : The cafeteria is a jungle

HYPERBOLE

  • an over-exaggeration used to prove a point. Hyperbole is NOT meant to be taken literally.
  • Example : My house is a million miles from here

IDIOM

  • a phrase that means something other than it's literal meaning.
  • Example : A leopard can not change its spots = you can't change yourself

IMAGERY

  • vivid descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the 5 senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell).
  • Example: The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy

METAPHOR

  • a direct comparison between two things that does NOT use like or as.
  • Example : My brother is a hungry polar bear

ONOMATOPOEIA

  • words that imitate sounds.
  • Example : Bang , boom

OXYMORON

  • a figure of speech in which seemingly contradictory words (opposite meaning) appear side-by-side.
  • Example : stop,keep moving

PERSONIFICATION

  • a description of a non-human character or object as though it had human qualities.
  • Example : The stars winked at me

  • a comparison between two unlike things that uses like or as.
  • Example : She was as beautiful as a butterfly
