PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Personification
“I can still see Hassan up on that tree, sunlight flickering through the leaves on his almost perfectly round face, a face like a Chinese doll chiseled from hardwood: his flat, broad nose and slanting, narrow eyes like bamboo leaves, eyes that looked, depending on the light, gold, green, even sapphire.”
This is telling us one of the memories Amir had of Hassan.
Metaphor
“I was breathing bricks.”
This is a figurative language because you can’t really breathe bricks. The quote shows the nervousness Amir gets when he is around Baba. Amir was nervous because Baba doesn’t accept Amir’s writing and Amir wants to please Baba.
Onomatopoeia
“rat-a-tat-tat”
This quote foreshadows the sounds that the citizens of Afghanistan will hear when Russia takes over.
Simile
“attention shifted to him like sunflowers turning to the sun.”
This quote shows that everyone loves Baba. The guests at the party are compared to the sunflowers, while Baba is compared to the sun. The simile shows that Baba is well liked.
Repetition
“For you, a thousand times over.”
This quote is repeated throughout the story. It shows how Hassan was loyal to Amir throughout the years and vice versa.
Metaphor
“Only a smile. A tiny thing. A leaf in the woods, shaking in the wake of a startled bird’s flight.”
This is a metaphor because it is comparing Sohrab’s smile to a leaf in the woods. It shows that even the smallest things have an impact in the world.
Simile
“They fell from the sky like shooting stars…”
This is a simile because it is comparing the falling kites that have been cut down to shooting stars that are falling across the sky.
