Idioms

An idiom is a language, dialect, or style of speaking peculiar to a person.

EXAMPLES

  • Time flies when you're having fun(time goes by fast)
  • Let the cat out of the bag(reveal the secret)
  • It's raining cats and dogs(it is raining heavily)
  • You've hit the nail on the head(you got it exactly correct)
  • She spilled the beans(she talked to much and told the secret)

Similes

An instance of such a figure of speech or a use of words exemplifying it.

EXAMPLES

  • As pretty as a flower(the beauty of someone or something)
  • To eat like a bird(how someone or something eats very little)
  • My heart is like a Zoo(I have a wild heart)
  • You are the apple of my eye(someone or something that is greatly loved)
  • As fresh as a daisy.

Metaphors

Something used,or regarded as being used,to represent something else.

Examples

  • Clever on the outside empty on the inside.
  • You're toast.
  • Don't beat a dead horse in the mouth.
  • We'll burn the bridge when we come to it.
  • Trying to thread a needle with a haystack.
