Literacy is more than reading and writing. It is UNDERSTANDING.

Many students have a comprehension problem. They say, "I read but I don't understand" (Tovani).
This is where teachers need to focus!

Backwards planning

How it helps

Keeping the end in mind

  • Know what the student needs to be able to do by the end of the lesson
  • Does this meet the standards?
  • How do we get there?
  • Create the lesson based off of the END GOAL
  • DON'T create the goal from the lesson!

Knowing that the end goal is that the student understands the text helps teachers to create lessons that boost comprehension!

Understanding where a student struggles can help a teacher create an END GOAL and backwards plan.

How do we get to know students

  • Talk to them!!
  • Investigate their test scores
  • From their testing scores, pinpoint trouble areas (standards not reached)
  • Look at class history
  • Research their culture

Assessments, Standards, and Instruction

All three of these areas coincide with each other. Assessments are used to measure whether standards have been met, and standards shape instruction.

Students understand new information through connections. As stated in Vygotsky's scaffolding/schema theory, these links help students build off of pre-existing knowledge to better understand what they are reading or writing.

Infusing a classroom with culture can help students make connections that will, in turn, help them with comprehension.

Like many students...

Diamond struggles with comprehension.

i wanted to improve

her reading comprehension skills

Diamond could read, but she did not always understand. My goal was to help her learn to understand.

i got to know her

  • I investigated her assessment results
  • I researched which standards she wasn't reaching
  • I talked to her
  • I asked her important questions about her life and culture
  • I formed an END GOAL

Diamond reiterated to me the fact that all students are different. They require individualized instruction in order to reach their full potential.
