FIRE INVESTIGATION

BENNETT BREWER BLOCK 5

CHEMISTRY OF FIRE

  • Fire is initiated must begin with the chemical formula of oxidation.
  • Heat, oxygen, and fuel must be present to start a fire.
  • Fire Tetrahedron: is saying that all of these elements are present to make the fire happen.

SEARCHING THE FIRE SCENE

  • The investigators should being searching the crime scene looking for signs of arson.
  • Most arsons start with the accelerants like gas or kerosene.
  • A known sign of arson is an irregular shaped pattern on the floor or the surface, that is case by pouring an accelerant on the ground.
  • Time constantly works against the investigators, any residues from a accelerant will evaporate in a few days.
  • Locate the fire's origin.

COLLECTION/PRESERVATION OF ARSON EVIDENCE

  • Two to three quarts of ashes need to be collected at the point of origin if arson is suspected.
  • The collection should include all porous materials and all other substances thought likely to contain flammable residues.
  • Specimens should be packaged immediately in an airtight container so any possible residues are not lost through evaporation.
  • Everything should be collected including liquids and igniters.

ANALYSIS OF FLAMMABLE RESIDUES

  • The residue is heated, any volatile residue in the debris is driven off and trapped in the container enclosed airspace.
  • A syringe extracts the vapor from the container.
  • The vapor from the container is then removed into a the gas chromatograph.
  • The pattern of the resultant chromatogram is compared to pattern produced by known petroleum products
