First Grade Math

Addition and Subtraction within 20
Students will use the methods and tools used in this visual presentation to solve problems involving addition and subtraction.

Use a ten frame to find the unknown number 10 - 5 =___

Ten frames are very useful in finding the unknown number. This is very beneficial with Algebraic thinking. Use the visual subtraction example along with with the ten frame handout for additional practice.

3+4=7
3+5=8

Addition, count the objects in each group. Ask what each sign means (+,=)

Add, Plus, More

Have the students read each of the three problems aloud and give the answer. Discuss the meaning and how we use the words; add, plus and more.

Unifix Cubes

Math Manipulatives
Math manipulatives, this is a picture of Unifix cubes. They are great for hands on adding and subtracting. Ask the students if they know any other kinds of math manipulatives?

Tim has 3 turtles. Sam gives Tim 6 more turtles. How many turtles does Tim have in all?

Hands on practice. Have each of the students use drawings or a ten frame to answer the word problem.

Sally has 8 dolls. She gives Holly 3 dolls. How many dolls does Sally have left?

Hands on practice. Have the students use math manipulatives such as Unifix cubes, base ten blocks, or counters to solve the word problem.
