PRESENTATION OUTLINE
When you suspect you're pregnant you should set up an appointment with your obstetrician/gynecologist
Why should you go to the doctor right away?
- It helps confirm pregnancy
- Find out your due date
- If you are pregnant it could help make sure you have a healthy baby
What are they looking for?
Health history (surgeries, previous pregnancies, contagious diseases you came in contact with)
You are given a Physical exam. You are weighed and your blood pressure, heart, lungs, and breasts are checked.
You are also given a Pelvic exam: During the pelvic exam, a Pap smear is taken to screen for cervical cancer and cultures are taken to detect sexually transmitted diseases (such as gonorrhea and chlamydia), a bimanual internal exam (with two fingers inside the vagina and one hand on the abdomen) will be performed to determine the size of your uterus and pelvis. This exam will also check for any abnormalities of the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes.
