THE FIRST THANKSGIVING

NOW AND THEN

  • Now we eat turkey
  • Then they actually didnt eat turkey they ate venison and birds
  • Now we sit around a table
  • Then some people stood, squatted, or sat around fires
  • Now we normally dress nicely - then there clothes weren't as nice

FACTS

  • Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower
  • It was celebrated for three days in 1621
  • Didn't become a national holiday until 200 years later
  • The Wampanogs (Indians) killed 5 deers as gifts
  • Wanpanogs taught them how to cultivate land

MENU

  • Meat- lobster, rabbit, chicken, deer
  • Vegetables- carrots, cabbage, leeks, onions
  • Dried fruit and chestnuts
  • Sweets- honey and maple syrup
  • They didn't have mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, or cranberry sauce

  • Wild turkeys- males can weigh between 16 and 24 pounds
  • Wild turkeys- females can weigh between 8 and 10
  • Domesticated- toms can weigh as much as 50 pounds
  • Domesticated- females can weigh up to 34 pounds
