RANDOM LEXIS

  • 1. To come up in class = to arise almost unexpectedly
  • We started off talking about something else
  • 2. To long for something = to want or desire something that you can't easily have
  • 3. Anything worthy of the name = to live up to its name
  • to be good enough to be called something

THE MEANINGS ARE IN THE CONTEXT OF TALKING ABT FISH 'N CHIPS

  • Fluffy = light, like soft clouds
  • Batter = a coating of flour, eggs, and milk, used to cover the fish
  • Moist = not dry
  • Succulent = used to describe meat or fish which is juicy
  • Fish = usually cod, haddock, or plaice (sometimes Dover sole)

MORE CHUNKS OF LANGUAGE

  • Chunky chips = not thin French fries sold at McDonald's
  • but thick cut potatoes (+/- 1cm3)
  • If you so desire = if that's the way you like / if you want
  • Tartare sauce = a white sauce with vinegar and capers
  • (You can buy it from M&S = /Marks & Spencer!)

FISH AND CHIPS SHOULDN'T BE

  • Soggy = squashy, soft, limp
  • Greasy = too oily* or fatty
  • *Oil could be used or lard. Lard = pig fat for cooking,
  • which I think is something like "taukai" in Lithuanian

"OPEN OR WRAPPED?"

  • A chippie = a fish and chip shop (it can also mean a carpenter!)
  • "Open or wrapped?"
  • They might ask you if you want your meal to be
  • left open so you can eat it straightaway, or
  • wrapped in paper so it doesn't get cold (to eat later)

AND FINALLY...

  • To munch on a bench =
  • To eat while sitting, for example, on a seat in a park
  • Seagulls = large birds which hunt fish and live near the sea
  • To have good taste (in music / food, etc.) = to appreciate
  • the food things in life!
