Slide Notes

This is an example of a Grade 8 project in which students must summarize a novel/play using the five act structure from a particular character's perspective. Each group is tasked with selecting meaningful images and quotations from the play / novel to highlight the character's arc.

This example explores Peeta's character arc in Hunger Games. The images that I chose that were not fan art explored a game motif as a reference to Peeta's famous "another piece in their game" line. I also tried to choose quotes from the Hunger Games that deal with memory, possession and loss because all those themes play a large part in Peeta's overall arc in the trilogy.

TRIBUTE

BECAUSE SHE CAME HERE WITH ME.
The goal of this slide is to provide exposition from this character's perspective.

His name is Peeta Mellark. He is from District 12. Peeta is ripped from his life of drudgery as a baker's son when he is chosen as the male tribute in the 74th Hunger Games. Peeta is a realist and knows that he is going to die in these brutal games, so he decides to make his death mean something by fabricating the star-crossed lovers twist in order to boost his fellow tribute's chances at victory. Peeta, who has had an unspoken, unrequited crush on Katniss Everdeen for almost a decade, has selflessly chosen to die for love so that he can remain true to himself.

I DON'T WANT THEM TO CHANGE ME.

TURN ME INTO SOME KIND OF MONSTER THAT I'M NOT.
The goal of this slide is to call out the conflict and the main obstacles for the character. (More than one slide may be needed for this section.)

Peeta's main conflict is that he doesn't want to be changed by his participation in the Hunger Games. He wants to hang on to his own human dignity and sense of himself.

LIAR

I REMEMBER EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU.
The goal of this slide is to call out the conflict and the main obstacles for the character. (More than one slide may be needed for this section.)

Yet, the only way Peeta can remain true to himself is to tell some lies and twist some truth. Because of his calculated love confession, Katniss is forced to play the role of Juliet to Peeta's Romeo and Peeta begins to fall for his own story.

VICTOR

The goal of this slide is to identify the climax of the story from the character's perspective.

After the terrible events in the arena, Peeta is utterly caught up in his own reality TV storyline. While Katniss has been moved by his sacrifice and cares for him, her decision to attempt to save both of them from the arena is more about her clinging to her own human dignity than romantic love. Peeta has inspired her to be equally selfless in that moment. Yet, Peeta believes that Katniss is in love with him.

LOVERBOY

The goal of this slide is to identify the plot twists that are revealed or wrapped up as the story nears to the end.

Peeta never thought that he would survive the Hunger Games, never thought that Katniss would return his love and he is partly right in his earlier thoughts. He has caught himself in his own web of words and is now caught in a larger, more dangerous web of Capitol politics. As foreshadowed by the amputation of his leg, the Games have left him permanently marked as Katniss must continue to fein a relationship with him in order to try to save them from the larger danger of being seen as rebels.

I DON'T WANT TO FORGET.

WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE GET BACK? I GUESS WE FORGET.
The goal of this slide is to analyze the state of the character at the end of the story / end of his portion of the story.

Peeta is left struggling to process his sense of betrayal after he realizes that Katniss is not in love with him. He knows that she saved them, but he is hurt by her rejection. Furthermore, the realist in him doesn't want to forget (or think that he can forget) how the Games have changed him.
