  • Monotheism:“There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet.”
  • Means “submission to God”.
  • First and last thing a Muslim hears in life.

SALAT

FIVE DAILY PRAYERS

  • The Muezzin chants the call to prayer.
  • Wudu: Washing of hands, feet, and face before prayer.
  • Bow, kneel, and recite parts of Qur’an.
  • Imam: Prayer leader in Mosque.
  • Always pray towards Mecca.

ZAKAT

  • Required amount donated to the poor.
  • 2.5% of income.
  • Funds education, housing, orphanages, and hospitals.
  • Used to fund public works projects in medieval times.
  • Pay others’ debts.

SAWM

FASTING DURING RAMADAN

  • Ramadan: 9th month in Islamic Lunar Calendar when Muhammad received his revelation from God
  • Fast during daylight hours
  • Try to kinder and charitable
  • Sick, elderly, young, and travelers excused from fasting.
  • End of Ramadan marked by celebration called Eid al’Fitr

  • Every Muslim able must participate once in life.
  • Men wear Ihram, women wear modest clothing
  • Run between two hills and drink from Zamzam well.
  • Circle Kaa’ba seven times
  • Eid al’Adha: Festival where they sacrifice an animal.
