CHARACTERISTICS

  • Short, bobbed haircuts
  • Fancy, loose dresses, generally short
  • Feather headpieces
  • Heavy, dark eye makeup
  • Thick red lipstick

HOW THEY ACTED

  • Many were considered "loose"
  • Danced with men "inappropriately"
  • Invented wild, explosive dances
  • Listened to jazz and stayed out late
  • Some smoked cigarettes

ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

  • Many flappers drank
  • In the 1920s, this was illegal
  • Prohibition forbid alcohol
  • Went to speakeasies

IMPORTANCE IN "GATSBY"

  • Zelda was considered "Queen of the Flappers
  • F. Scott used her "type" in many of his books
  • Daisy is based off of Zelda
  • Daisy and Jordan can be considered flappers
