FLASH FLOODS

CHRISTIAN HAMRE

WHAT ARE FLASH FLOODS

  • Flash floods are short term events
  • They are large amounts of water that
  • drown an area, destroy homes,
  • and can kill

WHY DO FLASH FLOODS HAPPEN

  • Main causes of flash floods are:
  • Levee failure
  • Dams breaking
  • Heavy Rain
  • Ice Jam or Snow melt

OTHER REASONS FOR OCCURRENCE

  • If water level rises to the overflowing
  • point on high ground, it can weaken
  • the soil and then cause mud slides.
  • Which then leads to more deaths and
  • property destruction.

WARNING SIGNS

  • The obvious factor, heavy rain
  • Also if there are back to back storms
  • Small streams and creeks begin to rise
  • The water becomes muddy

MAJOR WARNING SIGN

  • If a normally small creek, no
  • more than six inches deep, starts
  • to rise and meets 10 ft. in one hour,
  • a flash flood will occur

RESULTS OF A FLASH FLOOD

  • Most fatalities of flash floods happen
  • in a vehicle. What some people don't realize
  • is that 2 ft. of rushing water can float a car.
  • Severe damage and flooding.
  • An average of 99 people die a year to flash floods
