Flipgrid is an app and a website used by millions of PreK to PhD students. Flipgrid is a place where scholars of all ages can find their voice, share their voice and respect the diverse voices of others.

Flipgrid has impacted my English Language Learners. The first time I used this program I was blown away at the impact it had. Many of my scholars heard and saw themselves on the screen for the first time. As they listened to themselves respond to a question they continued to hit record until their English was perfect. Students had no idea how much assessing I was getting done in their 30 sec-2 min video. Just from that response alone I was hooked. Flipgrid can be used for so much more that speaking and Listening. I am excited to share with you all the ways flipgrid can help you teach as well as help schlars learn.

Flipgrid and Language Learners

Published on Oct 12, 2019

This is a presentation that will be shown to a group of teachers who work with English Language Learners. In an effort to give teachers and scholars tools for learning and development I choose Flipgrid. It is an amazing tool that will support any teacher in any form of instruction.

Flipgrid is a social learning platform.
Educators ask questions.
Students respond and create a web of discussion.

Flipgrid presents very much like the social media platforms that are available today. Teachers and scholars alike can pose discussion topics, questions and projects. When a topic is presented scholars respond by doing a live video that records the response. Each person involved in the discussion is part of a grid. Grids can be classrooms, learning groups, students groups, and professors alike. Flipgrid has many different parts that allow for those involved to interact, collaborate and discuss.

Flipgrid incorporates

  • Multiple Language Learning strategies
  • Multiple content areas
  • Multiple forms of assessment
  • Multiple opportunities for interaction, collaboration and discussion
Flipgrid can help teach using multiple strategies for teaching English Language learners. Along with the incredible ways that language learning strategies can be used, Flipgrid can actually used in all areas of instruction and curriculum. Every aspect of flipgrid is using the strategies of interaction, collaboration and discussion. The next slides are going to focus on the Language Learning Strategy, Curricular area that it can be used in, and how using this app can help a scholar who is learning language.

Strategy #1-Leveled Questions with Flipgrid

  • Leveled Questions-Teachers can ask questions according to language levels and students can respond.
  • With Flipgrid teachers can ask questions to scholars according to language levels so they can respond with success.
  • Scholars can work together to answer questions and also ask discussion questions to other groups.
  • Inquiry does not just involve one subject area. Leveled questions are a part of all areas of instruction, math, science, social studies, language arts.... Questions are the foundation of all learning.
  • (Herrell & Jordan, 2019 p. 108
Inquiry is the base of all learning. When a question is asked an answer is sought out and when answers are found learning happens. Teaching scholars how to ask and answer questions is an English Language Arts standard focus for all grade levels.
"Ask and answer questions about key details in text" is the standard that crosses all grade levels and all areas of curriculum.
Questions and inquiry are the basis of all subject areas. When a scholar starts a science unit they have questions about phenomena that may have been presented, or why something looks the way it does. When a scholar begins a math unit they may wonder what a sign means and how it applies to them. In Social Studies scholars may have questions surrounding historical events and why or how they happened. Questions are apart of all of our brains functions. Every learner has questions. We are all learners and we all have questions. According to Herrell and Jordan, leveled questions allow teachers to ask questions according to the language level of the scholar to give them opportunity to ask and answer questions with success. Building the skill of Inquiry in our language learners will help them build understanding, language and confidence as they respond in a video discussion that just the teacher can see or the whole group can see. This also gives the teacher an assessment of language levels and ways that she or he can direct questions (Herrell & Jordan, 2019).

Strategy #2-Communication Games with flipgrid

  • Creates opportunities for verbal interaction
  • Scholars can communicate a task and then another group can work to solve
  • Scholars can work to present a solution based on inquiry
  • Students can demonstrate a task and another can follow the video instructions
  • Teachers can pose a task and scholars can follow the instructions

Communications Games can also touch all areas of curriculum and can be used at many grade levels. I can see that this strategy would be incredibly useful in a STEM challenge. Teachers can pose the challenge via Flipgrid and scholars can video their process and result of the challenge. Students can also communicate how and why they did what they did. I have used this personally with my first scholars. We did a car STEM challenge. It was incredible to have a video of the teams process. It was also incredibly impacting for scholars to see what they look like when they persevere versus giving up. Flipgrid has been an incredible tool for students self/student evaluation as well as teacher evaluation.

Strategy #3 Small Groups and Partners

  • Flipgrid allows groups to be made based on need for instruction and collaboration
  • Allows for comprehensible input according to levels of group
  • Partners can work together in the classroom all the way out to the global world
  • Teachers can set up partnerships and small groups according to language levels.
  • Scholars can work in small groups and partnerships to accomplish a task or answer research questions.
  • Teachers can scaffold and differentiate instruction according to grids and levels.
Flipgrid is centered upon the idea of collaboration, interaction and voice. Using the strategy of small groups and partners scholars can work on a Flipgrid to show research, answers, ask questions, and have a real discussion with other partners or groups. Flipgrid is also a tool for this strategy because teachers can scaffold and differentiate according to language levels of scholars. This would allow language learners to have models of speaking to work together and build confidence in their presentation. (Herrell & Jordan, 2019).
This strategy is for all areas of curriculum as well. An example is in the area of social studies. Scholars can role play certain social situations and use appropriate language. This is also a model for language development. Scholars can also role play periods of time or parts of a book they may be reading (Herrll & Jordan, 2019).

For Language Learing Success: https://www.flipgrid.com
Flipgrid has been an incredible tool in my first grade classroom. I have seen first hand how it can help my language learners grow in their development. The strategies that can be used through this app/website are endless. It is an incredibly easy program that can be figured out in about 10 minutes. It is free. In a world where technology seems to be taking away our voice and personal interaction, let this technology add to it and keep the gift of collaboration going.
