Where is it?

  • These types of homes are usually found in Northeastern France
  • In the Bresse region
  • Located in the Rhone-Alpes Province
  • In the foothills of the Jura Mountains (Part of the Alps)

What is it?

  • The Bresse house is type of farm
  • It is expansive and rural
  • They raise pigs, chickens and horses
  • Has 3 main buildings
  • Living quarter, bake house and stables

The Roof

  • The roofs on the houses are fit for the environment
  • They are hipped, to protect from harsh rain and snow
  • They also have eaves
  • Wooden beams support the eaves
  • Those are used to dry foods for the long, cold winter

THE BIsé

  • The north side of the roof is the flattest
  • This is for protection from the bise
  • The bisé is a freezing, dry wind
  • It comes from Switzerland
  • Blows south

  • The living quarters rooms are configured for warmth
  • There are no windows or doors on the north side
  • The most windows or on the east side
  • This is to heat up the house in the morning by the sun
  • The family lives in the furnace in winter, which is on the south

  • Because it was so adapted to local conditions
  • Burgundy, which is to the left of Bresse has a milder climate
  • To the east is Switzerland, which is mostly mountainous
