WHAT IS FOOD BORNE ILLNESS?

  • It is any illness resulting from the consumption of contaminated food
  • Infants and children are more susceptible to food borne illnesses
  • Common symptoms include ; stomach cramps, nausea, vomitting
  • If you think you have food borne illness please contact your doctor immediately!!!

CAUSES OF FOOD BORNE ILLNESSES

  • The 'danger zone' is between 41 -140 Fahrenheit
  • Cleaning removes food and other types of soil from a surface
  • Sanitizing reduces the number of microorganisms
  • Five things that should not be worn in the kitchen ; jewelry, loose clothes
  • Synthetic clothes ,open toes shoes and shades

THINGS APPROPRIATE TO WEAR IN THE KITCHEN

  • Apron
  • Wedding ring
  • Closed toed shoes
  • Hairnets
  • Gloves

STEPS FOR HANDWASHING

  • Wet hands with warms water
  • Apply hand soap
  • Lather and wash hands at least for15 seconds
  • Rinse with warm water
  • Dry hands

WAYS TO PREVENT CUTS

  • Keep knives, scissors in the drawers
  • Use proper utensils for a task
  • Use a cutting board
  • Pay attention while cutting
  • Wear gloves

WHAT DO I DO IF I CUT MYSELF?

  • First, stop what you're doing!
  • If the cut is not that deep apply pressure to stop the bleeding
  • If it is very deep and you feel dizzy , call 911
  • If bleeding stops put a ban aid on it

HOW SHOULD I CLEAN UP BROKEN GLASS?

  • Put on rubber gloves
  • Use your gloves hands to pick up the big pieces
  • Vacuum the remains
  • Use bread to pick up the rest
  • Wipe down with a towel

WAYS TO PREVENT FALLS AND BRUISES

  • Do not walk in socks on slippery ground
  • Buy cordless phone
  • Keep a flashlight by your bed side
  • Wear low toed heels
  • Make sure all rugs are all of the floor

WAYS TO PREVENT SHOCKS AND BURNS

  • Don't poke foreign objects into electric plug
  • Don't use electrical appliances near running water
  • Don't stick fork or knives into toasters into appliances
  • Repair worn out electrical cord
  • Follow appliance instructions

  • Poisons and chemicals should be stored in locked cabinets
  • If you suspect chemical contamination
  • Call 911!!!

WAYS TO PREVENT FIRES

  • Test smoke alarms monthly and change batteries annually
  • Never leave the stove unattended
  • At night before you go to sleep, unplug all electrical items
  • Buy a fixed guard to place around an open fire
  • Always wear a proper candle holder

  • Aim at the fire
  • Squeeze
  • Sweep the fire

  • Turn of source of heat
  • Don't pour water on it
  • Again! Don't pour water on it
  • Attempt to remove all oxygen from flame
  • If you can't cover it, pour baking soda on it
