• historical records have dating back to the Song dynasty (960-1279 AD)
• Li Yu fell in love with a dancer who bound her feet and performed a 'lotus dance'

motivations

• men were looking for women with small feet
• lower class women could marry into a higher social class

foot binding

• women rich and poor bound their feet
• the practice was banned in 1912, however it was still continued in many parts of the country
• when communists came to power they would fine families who still practiced foot binding
• this beauty method causes hip problems

Women today have the same idea as women who mound their feet, but they don't go to that extent. (except plastic surgery because that's kind of the same thing as foot binding except with other body parts)
