FOOTPRINTS IN THE SNOW

BY AVA MCCARTY

AS I LEFT FOOTPRINTS IN THE SNOW,

I THOUGHT OF SNOWMEN DANCING IN THE STREETS.

PLAYING, BEING THEM HAPPY SELVES,

THE STREET LIGHTS GLOWING, SHOWING THEIR SHADOWS.

A CHILD POPPED OUT FROM BEHIND THE LIGHT,

THROWING SNOWBALLS AT THE SNOWMEN AND MYSELF.

I SLIGHTLY CHUCKLED AND PICKED A HANDFUL OF SNOW UP,

AND ROUNDED IT INTO A SOFT BALL.

BEFORE THE LITTLE GIRL THREW ANOTHER SNOWBALL AT ME,

I LAUGHED AND THREW ONE LIGHTLY AT HER.

SHE LAUGHED, FALLING INTO A PILE OF SNOW.

A SNOWMAN HELPED HER UP, THEN WALKED BACK TO HIS OWN KIND.

THEN AS I TURNED AROUND TO CHECK BEHIND ME,

I WHIPPED BACK AROUND, SEEING THE SNOWMEN NOT PLAYING.

THE CHILD WAS A FADED SHADOW IN THE ALLEY,

THE STREET LIGHT WAS FLICKERING.

AS I WALKED HOME, I REALIZED SOMETHING.

IT WAS ONLY A DREAM.
