FORCES IN FLUIDS

TARA ZANDI

Pressure in Fluids

  • fluid pressure depends on depth
  • greater the depth, the greater the pressure
  • fluids include liquids and gases: they take the shape of their containers and will flow
  • fluids flow from high pressure to low pressure ares
  • P=F/A: pressure=force/area

Density & Buoyancy

  • density is the ratio of mass to volume in a given substance D=m/v
  • sinking: an object will sink if it is more dense than the fluid it is in or if it has greater weight than the buoyant force
  • floating: an object will float if it is less dense than the fluid it is in or is equal to the buoyant force

Archimede's Principle

  • displace: to take the place of
  • principle: buoyant force on an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces
