PRESSURE IN FLUIDS

  • Fluid pressure depends on depth.
  • Greater the depth, the greater the pressure.
  • Fluids include liquids and gases: they take the shape of their containers and will flow.
  • Fluids flow from high pressure to low pressure areas.
  • P=F/A pressure= force/area

DENSITY AND BOUYANCY

  • Density is the ratio of mass to volume in a given substance. D=M/V
  • Sinking: an object will sink if it is more dense than the fluid it is in or if it has greater weight than the buoyant force.
  • Floating: an object will float if it is less dense than the fluid it is in or is equal to that buoyant force.

ARCHIMEDE'S PRINCIPLE

  • Displace: take the place of.
  • Principle: buoyant force on an object on an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces.
