BLOOD SPATTER PATTERNS

BY: BRITNI ELLIS

ARTERIAL SPURTING

  • This type of blood spatter occurs when blood exits the body under some force of pressure due to a breached artery
  • This is also known as the Gushing pattern

BACK SPATTER

  • In this blood pattern the blood is directed back towards the source of force that caused the spatter

CAST-OFF PATTERN

  • This blood stain pattern occurs when blood is thrown or released from a blood-bearing object while in motion
  • For example if a knife with blood on it was thrown there would be a cast-off on a surface around it

HIGH-VELOCITY IMPACT STAIN (HVIS)

  • This blood pattern is caused by a high velocity impact to a blood source
  • These types of blood patterns can be caused by a gunshot or any type of high speed machinery

MEDIUM-VELOCITY IMPACT STAIN (MVIS)

  • This blood pattern is caused by a medium velocity impact on a blood source
  • A beating usually causes this type of blood spatter

LOW-VELOCITY IMPACT STAIN (LVIS)

  • This blood pattern is caused my a low velocity impact on a blood source

PASSIVE DROP

  • These bloodstain pattern drops are caused or created by the force of gravity acting along
  • This is also the bleeding pattern

SWIPE PATTERN

  • This pattern is caused by a transfer of blood from a moving source onto an unstained surface
  • The direction left on the pattern depends on the the object and the way it moves

TRANSFER/CONTACT STAIN

  • This bloodstain pattern is caused when a bloody surface comes in contact with another surface

MISTING

  • This is when blood has been reduced to a fine spray as result to how much energy and force is applied
