Formative Science Assessment

Plugged and Unplugged

Q1: What do you think of when you hear the phrase "Formative Assessment"?

I think of short quizzes used as "pre-tests". I think of informal with students while they are working on a project.

Q2: What are some different purposes for formative assessment in Science?

Formative assessment could be used in lesson design to help focus more time and resources on concepts that are poorly understood by most learners instead of those concepts that are better understood. This needs to be done before lesson plans have been finalized.

Formative assessment can be used to identify individuals who need additional scaffolding or extension. The educator needs to have plans in place for support BEFORE assessment.

Q4: What are some things you have done for Science formative assessments that worked well (or did NOT work well)? Why do you think they worked or didn't work?

I used a clip board with every learner's name on it. I walked around the class and talked with each individual learner while they were working on their projects. If I felt like they needed more support they got a "-" sign, if they seemed to be getting it I put an additional stroke on it and turned it into a "+" sign. If they really mastered it I put a circle "O" around the plus sign. This was informal but it was effective for me and made sure that I was interacting with every single learner.
