BEGINNING OF BATTLE

  • Union attacked Confederates
  • Ironclads surrounded the island
  • Attack began at 7:45 PM

MIDDLE OF BATTLE

  • The Union troops surrounded the fort
  • The Confederates started fighting back.
  • The Union could not make it inside.

END OF BATTLE

  • The Union lost many men.
  • The troops were able to make it inside.
  • The Confederates had too many men.
  • The Union surrendered.

THE 54TH MASSACHUSETTS

  • All black infantry
  • Consisted of freed slaves
  • Led by Colonel Shaw
  • Shaw was killed in the battle
  • People thought black soldiers were not as good as other soldiers.
  • This battle changed their minds.
