The Flavian Amphitheater (Colosseum)

  • The Colosseum was constructed around 70-72 A.D. by Emperor Vespasian as a gift to the Romans
  • His son Titus opened the Colosseum some years later as a center for entertaining the Roman people.
  • Gladiator Fights, Animal Fights, and even Mock Naval engagements took place here.
  • The Colosseum could hold more than 50,000 people!
  • It was located just of the Roman Forum

Tullianum (Prison)

  • Also known as the Mamertine Prison
  • The prison was used as a jail/holding cell for short periods of time before executions and sometimes as a place for the executions themselves.
  • Was not used for long term sentences. Prisoners were only held for short periods of time.
  • The site has been used for Christian Worship since medieval times and is now occupied by two churches.

Via Sacra (The Sacred Road)

  • The oldest, widest, and most famous road in Ancient Rome.
  • Many important ceremonies and celebrations took place on the road.
  • This road runs all throughout the Roman Forum.
  • It gets its name because of all the religious and sacred buildings that lined the road as well as the purpose of the road itself.

Curia (Senate House)

  • Public, official, and religious issues were discussed and decided here.
  • The Roman Senate used the Curia as their meeting house.
  • The Curia was also used by the Roman Catholic church to conduct is business.

Rostra

  • The rostra was a large platform in the forum used by speakers and officials to address the public.
  • The front of the platform was decorated with parts of captured ships.
