THE USE OF TEHCNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

EME 6316C: INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT/TECHNOLOGY

ENLIVEN OUR ENVIRONMENT

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE WITH TECHNOLOGY
Instead of your traditional school where teachers lecture, we read from textbooks, we answer questions, homework, and assessments with pencil & paper…our learning environment would now consist of a technology based instruction.

From the outside looking in, an outsider would see our “future” using technology to enhance their success as students. Teachers would be seen in more of an instructional leader role, rather than the current direct instruction role.

ACHIEVING SUCCESS

ONE GRADE AT A TIME
One grade at a time…

All students would be issued a school owned iPad to be used for school purposes only. All assessments, projects, etc. will be completed on each student’s individual iPads.

Teachers will present all material through textbooks purchased through on-line sources, through PowerPoint, Prezi, and multi-media presentations.

The plan for iPad technology implementation is to start with the incoming kindergarteners each year. These students will be receiving iPads that will follow with them throughout their academic career.

OUR PLAN

OUT WITH THE OLD...IN WITH THE NEW!
--is to utilize technology through our iPads with specific content based on the following criteria:

Instructional Design
Telecommunications
Interactive Coursework
Distance Learning
Web-based Instruction
Ethics & Equity
Media Selection & Copyright

Untitled Slide

Is… “the practice of creating instructional experiences which make the acquisition of knowledge and skill more efficient, effective, and appealing.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instructional_design

The instructional design of the iPads given to students will be on “student” mode. This means nothing will be allowed to be downloaded to the equipment without administration (at the county level) approval.

Students will only be able to access information, programs and textbooks that are relevant to the grade they are in and will not be able to use the Ipad for personal pleasure.

Instruction will be differentiated through apps and programs that are able to be manipulated based on student needs.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Is… “a general term for a vast array of technologies that send information over distances.”
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-telecommunications.htm

Students will have the ability to “IM/Chat” to a teacher as well as other students through their iPads (message app) after hours. All messages will be logged on the school’s server, and students will be held responsible for all postings. Any inappropriate messaging or usage will result in disciplinary action according to school policy.

Students will have the “IM/Chat” feature turned off during school hours (this will be done at the district level) so students will not be able to chat at will. This feature is designed to curtail abuse of the education opportunity the students are receiving.

INTERACTIVE COURSEWORK

"WHEN YOU KNOW BETTER YOU DO BETTER." - MAYA ANGELOU
“Interactive media normally refers to products and services on digital computer-based systems which respond to the user’s actions by presenting content such as text, graphics, animation, video, audio, games, etc.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_media

Teachers will lead instruction using interactive based lessons for students. Students will be learning in a "hands on" atmosphere, interacting with the coursework and with other other students, both locally and globally.

E. Sutton Flynt and William Brozo note that “We must design instruction that reflects the media sphere in which children and youth live” (2010, 538).

"EDUCATION IS OUR PASSPORT TO THE FUTURE, FOR TOMORROW

BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE WHO PREPARE FOR IT TODAY." - MALCOLM X
Is… “the education in which students receive instruction over the internet from a video, etc., instead of going to school”.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/distance+learning

Each Ipad with be set up with a student email and an online course schedule. The online course schedule will reflect the student’s actual schedule and will be labeled by teacher name and Subject Title.

Each course will have a “dropbox” folder which is where students will be turning in their assignments. Each course will have a “discussion” folder where students will be required to have class discussions/participate/ share their thoughts and ask questions, and be able to respond to other students posts.

In Graphic Inquiry: Dynamic differentiation and digital age learning, A. Lamb and L. Johnson say that “When we combine graphic elements and engaging environments with inquiry-based learning, we have a dynamic environment for differentiated, digital-age learning.

WEB-BASED INSTRUCTION

"A MIND IS LIKE AN UMBRELLA, ONLY USEFUL WHEN OPEN." - ALI BIN ABI THALIB
Students will still have a teacher as an instructional leader in the classroom, teaching students the required course material needed. However, the students will be broken up into small groups. Or possibly, as a whole, watch different educators (through their iPads) teach the same topic through web-based instruction.

Web-based Instruction is “ A form of computer-based instruction which uses the World Wide Web as the primary delivery method of information. A textbook is usually required and all other materials, as well as communication with the instructor, are provided through the course website. The terms “online courses” and “web-based instruction” are sometimes used interchangeably.”
http://www.linkonlearning.com/corporate/elearning/definitions.htm

Web-based instruction will also be beneficial if we have a substitute teacher. In this case, students will not necessarily miss out on “instruction time” because of an illness or an emergency. By logging on to his or her iPad and utilizing web-based instruction, all students will have the ability to practice skills and see the coursework missed. Students can still maintain a proficient status and not get as far behind due to uncontrollable circumstances.

ETHICS

Is defined as… “the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation.”
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ethic

Faculty, Parents & Students will be required to sign an “Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)” that will be county wide, every year before they receive an Ipad.

This policy is a legitimate policy that explains what is appropriate usage of school board property and what violates this policy.

The AUP will also be a signed document that will be strictly enforced and can/will be a legal binding agreement/document that can/will result in expulsion if a student fails to adhere to the appropriate usage.

Untitled Slide

Is defined as… “justice according to natural law or right; specifically :freedom from bias or favoritism.”
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/equity

Because each student will fill out and sign the Acceptable Use Policy, equity will be the key ingredient as to who is punished and who is not.

An administrator at the county level (or even a third party affiliate) will have the final judgment call if a student has broken the AUP and needs to have further action taken against them. By doing this, the fidelity of the program is being ensured and taken seriously.

MEDIA SELECTION &

Media Selection & Copyright will be regularly addressed when dealing with the students and their iPad use.

Proper monitoring by teachers will be required when a project, assignment, or research paper is written and submitted. However, there are also copyright & plagiarism documents in place that students and parents will be required to sign as a preventative measure.

All Media Selection will be preloaded on to the iPads before they are assigned to students. This function will be controlled through administrator rights, in order to avoid additional media being selected that might be inappropriate.

RESEARCH

"ONLY THE EDUCATED ARE FREE." - EPICTETUS
“We must make it a priority to equip all schools, especially low socio-economiv status (Ses) schools with students’ access and use, as well as, teacher training and support (Hohlfeld, Ritzhaupt, Barran & Kemker, 2008) for keeping up with these digital tools that are transforming literacy instruction and student learning in the classroom.”

Students liked the idea of having all their course reading materials (textbooks), including electronic reserve articles, on one reading device. Students did not feel the need to print nearly as much as they did in other classes because they found the iPad’s annotation tools quite adequate. http://www.apple.com/education/ipad/

“As these tools continue to transform literacy instruction, students internalize lifelong skills needed for success in this global society. Despite the fact that students are being equipped with some or all of these changing literacy tools, such use should be available to all students. Therefore, we must not ignore the digital divide” (Saine, P. 2012)
