THE FOUNDING OF ROME

ROMULUS AND REMUS

  • A myth taught by the Romans to explain how Rome was founded
  • Were twin brothers who were raised by a wolf
  • When they grew older, Romulus killed Remus
  • Romulus is then given credit for founding the city of Rome
  • This is believed to happen in 753 BC

AENEAS

  • Was a leader of the Trojan army, during the Trojan War
  • When Troy fell, he fled with a group of refugees and landed on the coast of Italy, near the Tiber River
  • Roma, a woman in his group, resisted when the rest wanted to move on
  • She burned the ships and left them stranded there
  • The group then stayed and founded the city of Rome

ARCHEOLOGIST FACT

  • City grew out go a number if settlements
  • They were vulnerable to attack so they banded together
  • Grew in size and strength due to trade in the Medditeranean
  • They were influenced by the Etruscan people to the north
  • Adapted trade, religion, and architecture from them
