FACTS ABOUT FRANCE

  • The law is a civil legal system. There is two types of laws private and public law.
  • France has a problem because there has been more births than deaths and more immigrants coming in. 300,000 more births than deaths, and 100,000 immigrants.
  • In 1993, a law was created to ban marriage between immigrants and French citizens.

THE MAIN RELIGIONS IN FRANCE

  • Roman Catholic 83-88%
  • Protestant 2%
  • Jewish 1%
  • Muslim 5-10%
  • Unaffiliated 4%

THE RELIGIOUS LAW IN 1905 IN FRANCE

  • France had created a law in 1905 of French Law on the Separation of the Churches and the State.
  • The law means that the government prohibit from recognizing, salarying, or subsiding any religion.
  • The law affected all religions in France. The French government has helped the Muslim population integrate into their society which is going great.

FRANCE'S HISTORY WITH MUSLIMS

  • After the agreement of Briand-Ceretti, which had weaken Separation of State and Church, the French Government could subsidize Muslim prayer rooms and the formation of imams.
  • The government tried to convince Muslim population to integrate into French society.
  • In the fall of 1994, the French Government had banned girls who wear “ostentatious” headwear during school.
  • In 2011, the French government decided to ban the headdresses of Muslim religious symbols, such as the Islamic female headscarf in public.
  • This caused minor protests in the streets.

CURRENT EVENTS INVOLVING MUSLIMS IN FRANCE

  • The reason why France is trying to integrate Muslims are history, philosophy, and contemporary concerns.
  • The immigration has been hard for French government because most of the people who immigrate to France are Muslim. The government has been trying to integrate the new comers because their are so many.

IMMIGRATION OF MUSLIM

  • The civil war in Algeria has caused many Muslims immigrate to France. Including many French citizens originally from Algeria.
  • Mostly the people who immigrate to France are children and families.
  • Muslims aren't aloud to become citizens back in 1870's when they first immigrated to France.

LAÏCITÉ

  • Laïcité is the absence of religious involvement in government affairs as well as absence of government involvement in religious affairs.
  • The main reason for laïcité is the place it occupies in the immigration of Muslims to France.
