FRANCIS BACON

EMMA LANSEIGNE

Born- London, England. January 22,1561 (1)

In December 1575 Francis Bacon finished his time at Trinity College in Cambridge. The following year he joined a law program at Honourable Society of Gray's Inn. However Bacon more enjoyed the Renaissance humanism that most schools in England were not focused on. Because of this, a year later he decided to go to Paris to work under the British ambassador to France. (2)

Now, Francis Bacon is famous for his philosophy of science... (3)

Francis Bacon wanted to form a new scientific outline. The platform of his new scientific method was based on the need for experimentation. His method highlighted the collecting data, analyzation of that data, and experiments all to observe what was being researched. (3)
Francis Bacon said preconceived opinions would tamper with observation. Because of this, he said when an empty mind followed his scientific method, true data and theories would be produced. (4)

This discovery was important to the time period because he thought it could “become a tool for the betterment of humankind.” Emphasizing the humanism he wanted to bring in proving why things happen instead of just stating that they happen. (3)

Geography influenced the creation of the artifact because many were interested in the idea of humanism- the betterment of humankind. Because many were so interested in this concept during the Renaissance when Francis Bacon created his version of the scientific method it intrigued many to try. This helping spread the idea of humanism- specifically with the scientific method being used to prove why things happened instead of just going along with them when they do- to all those that wanted to move forward with the idea of the said new scientific outline.

This artifact is an example of humanism because it encourages people to gain knowledge about unknown events and ideas. The location of the Renaissance was filled with many that were interested in finding out more about life. The scientific method gave those interested with this concept a specific outline to follow in order to successfully gain true knowledge. If no one was interested in this idea of humanism and learning more about mankind, the idea of Francis Bacon’s scientific method would not have spread causing it to not be as well known today.

“The job of an artist is always to deepen the mystery.” (5) This quote proves Francis Bacon is a humanist because it promotes mystery, life as seen in the middle ages for example was straightforward based on getting to heaven- this shown in the artwork from that time period. However, this quote states an artist should “deepen the mystery” a humanist belief of giving something more to life and promoting curiosity about why certain artistic choices are made.

Francis Bacon’s scientific method affects the modern world because it gives us the outline to learn about topics that interest or confuse us- just as it did during the Renaissance when it was created. In order to properly find accurate and precise data the scientific method is used so scientists around the world can fully back up their data in order to prove it’s clarity.
