EARLY LIFE

  • Was born on August 1,1779
  • Son to John Ross and Ann Charlton
  • Sister named Ann
  • From Maryland
  • Attended school at home until 10

When he was 10 he went to live with his grandmother and attended Saint John's College until he was 17

Francis wanted to be a lawyer so his uncle had his friend Judge Chase train and teach him

In his early twenties he married Mary Tayloe Lloyd

WAR OF 1812

  • Was trapped on a british ship
  • Was negotiating with the British
  • Saw the attack on Fort McHenry
  • Was a lieutenant and quarter-master
  • Inspired to write about the attack

After seeing the flag still waving after the attack on Fort McHenry, Francis decided to write a poem about it

His poem "The Star-Spangled Banner" was published in many newspapers and became quite popular

After the war he helped establish the American Colonization Society

Francis continued to be a lawyer and talk about his famous poem. He was very patriotic

In 1843, Francis died of pleurisy at the home of his daughter, Elizabeth's house

Many monuments and schools have been made and named in his honor

The Star-Spangled Banner became the national anthem on March 3,1931, and was declared by President Hoover
