~The History of the Memorial~ The memorial commission was established in 1955. The planning and construction took almost 40 years until it was dedicated by William Jefferson Clinton on May 2, 1997. The memorial design was made by Lawrence Halprin.
The memorial is divided into 4 sections symbolizing the 4 terms that FDR served, and in each section you will find a reference to the events that occurred during that term.
Because FDR was hit with polio at a very young age the whole memorial was made handicap accessible.
The water features, such as the waterfalls, are dedicated to the hydrotherapy that he received. It is also dedicated to the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation that was for people like him.
Each section has a quote from one of FDR's speeches.
At the entrance of the memorial there is a statue of FDR in his wheelchair. That statue was put there to honor his determination of hiding his disease.
