FRANZ BOAS

Early Life

  • Franz Boas was born July 9, 1858 in Minden Germany.
  • Franz Boas started to love natural sciences when he was five.
  • Later on, while he was studying at the gymnasium in Minden, he became interested in history and culture.

EDUCATION

  • Franz Boas went to the universities of Heidelberg,Bonn and Kiel.
  • He received a Ph.D in physics and a minor in geometry.

MIDDLE LIFE

  • After a brief amount of time, Franz Boas got back to studying in Berlin.
  • In 1883 he decided to take his first yearlong science expedition to Baffin Island in Northern Canada.

MIDDLE LIFE CONTINUED

  • After his trip to Baffin Island; Franz was more interested in non-western civilizations.
  • After being with his anthropologist friend, Franz grew an interest for anthropology.

MIDDLE LIFE CONTINUED

  • Franz took a three month trip to British Columbia in New York.
  • Franz married a woman named Marie Krackowizer that lived there.
  • Franz was offered a job as the assistant editor for journal science.

MIDDLE LIFE CONTINUED

  • Franz Boas became a docent in anthropology as another job at Clark University.
  • Franz went on a series of expeditions referred to as the Morris K. Jesup Expedition.
  • Franz said the theory that all human societies move from an initial form of matrilineal to patrilineal organization is wrong.

MIDDLE LIFE CONTINUED

  • Franz said their was exceptions to this theory.
  • Franz continued to spread this idea to everyone.
  • Franz had trouble getting this idea around, but people eventually did believe his theory.

LATE LIFE AND PERSONAL INFORMATION

  • Son of Meier Boas and Sophie Boas.
  • Husband of Marie Boas.
  • Died December 21, 1942 in New York City from a stroke.
