  • he exact year and date of Douglass's birth is unknown
  • Douglass lived with his maternal grandmother, Betty Bailey

HIS LIFE GROWING UP

  • He escaped slavery
  • Became a leader of the abolitionist movement
  • He's an incisive antislavery writer.

LIFE AS A SLAVE

  • his plantation was located between Hillsboro and Cordova
  • years later after escaping to the north, he took the surname Douglass, having already dropped used of his two middle names
  • he was separated from his mother when he was an infant
