1803- LOUISIANA PURCHASE

  • France sold Louisiana to the United States of America
  • renouncing its last territorial possessions on continental North America

1804-HAITIAN REVOLUTION

  • Dessalines declared the independence of Haiti
  • French lost most control over the politics of the nation

1806-CONFEDERATION OF THE RHINE

  • Napoleon created the Confederation of the Rhine
  • a union of French client states composed of 16 states in present-day Germany
  • Napoleon dissolved the Holy Roman Empire

1807- SERIES OF ORDERS IN COUNCIL

  • Britain impeded American Trade with France
  • French became angry that they could not trade
  • upset that they could not utilize resources from America

1812- FRENCH INVASION OF RUSSIA

  • also known as Patriotic War of 1812
  • Napoleon hoped to persuade Russia to cease trade with Britain
  • did that so that France could dominate trade and utilize more resources
  • therefore, they could gain an advantage over Britain

1814- WAR OF THE SIXTH COALITION

  • with Austria, Russia, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Sweden, Spain
  • invaded France to defeat Napoleon
  • this slowed France's imperialism for a few years

1815- END OF NAPOLEONIC WARS

  • series of wars between French Empire and nations lead by Britain
  • Napoleon finally defeated in 1815 in Waterloo
  • all of France's gains were taken away by victors
  • slowed the growth of France's reign of power and imperialism for a few years

1823-FRENCH INVASION OF SPAIN

  • French invasion of Spain: France started its invasion of Spain
  • eventually succeeding and restoring the monarchy
  • ended Liberal Triennium

1866-FRENCH INTERVENTION IN MEXICO

  • French troops start withdrawing from the country
