Pierre Corneille
-He was born in 1606-1684
- he was a French Tragedian
-his patron was Cardinal Richelieu
-Le Cid is his best known play, performed in January 1936
-about a medieval Spanish warrior.

- His real name was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin
-Born in 1622 and died in 1673
-He was considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy in western literature
-best known work the school of wives

Jean Racine
-born in 1639 and died in 1699
- French dramatist
- one of the three playwrights of the 17th century
- Les Plaideurs
- the only comedy that he wrote and it was inspired by The Wasp by Aristophanes

  • FRENCH NEOCLASSICAL theatre often referred to as theater
  • It was developed in France in the 16th century
  • Had a great impact on writing, scenic design, and production
  • It emerged with the study of Latin and Greek
