1. There are about 250,000 people that live in New Caledonia, a special collectivity of France.
2. Located in Oceania in the Melanesia region, New Caledonia is about 1,210 km or 750 miles east of Australia, with Vanuatu in the north.
3. The largest city and capital is Noumea with about 100,000 people, followed by Mont Dore, Dumbea, Paita, We, Tadine, Poindimie, Bourail, Kone, and Houailou.
4. The mainland includes a central mountain range with Mont Panie being the highest peak at 1,629 metres or 5,344 feet. The eastern side of the mountain range is more vegetation, the western coast is more plains and agriculture areas.
