●Class system caused most of the problems.

●Divided into 3 Estates
●Could not move from estate to estate

●Third estate wanted change in social structure

●Population grew
●Cost of living rose
●Peasants got mad

●Bourgeoisie wanted more political power
●Nobles resented the king’s absolute power and wanted more influence

●Growing financial crisis added to problems
●Debts of King Louis’ loomed

ESTATES GENERAL

1789
●Summoned the Estates-General in 1789, May 5 1789
First one in 175 years.
●To get additional taxes
●Delegates representing each estate
Third wanted to meet together so they could dominate, king didn't like this and ordered for the medieval rules to be used
●Louis plan- hoped they would agree on new taxes on Nobles
●Nobles wanted to protect their privileges, weaken royal power and gain control of gov’t
●Nobles wanted to join with First Estate to dominate Third

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

CREATION OF THE
●Third estate balked at idea
●Called for a joint meeting of Estates, with each delegate voting as an individual.

●King didn’t like this idea and wanted them to meet separate.
Third estate met separately and decided to start the National Assembly and make changes to government
●the next morning, The Rep of Third Estate were locked out of E-G
●Named themselves the National Assembly and met at an indoor tennis court with others who supported their cause.

TENNIS COURT OATH

NOT TO DISBAND UNTIL NEW CONSTITUTION HAD BEEN WRITTEN
●Took and oath to not disband until a constitution for France had been written.
●Called the Tennis Court Oath

●King saw trouble ahead
●Ordered other estates (1 and 2) to join in the National Assembly
●Sent troops

●Chaos soon broke out.

●Upper clergy and nobility wanted to keep privileges
●Third estate wanted equality

●King sent more troops to Versailles
●People reacted and took over the Bastille.

STORMING OF BASTILLE

JULY 14, 1789
●July 14 1789- huge mob surrounded the Bastille and tried to steal weapons and force its way into fortress.

●Freed 7 prisoners
●98 rioters were killed
●Led to new “revolutionary” gov’t in Paris

The Great Fear
●“wave of violence” through France

●Peasants began to arm themselves
●Some drove landlords off property, broke into manors, robbed granaries, and destroyed feudal records.
