Landscape

  • The biome is the tundra.
  • The area has permafrost, and animals include polar bears, beluga whales, and caribou.
  • Glacier-sculpted boulders inhabit the edge of Hudson Bay, and where the sea gives way to rolling tundra.
  • Small shrubs push up through permafrost and vibrant flowering plants line the ground.
  • Stretches of boreal forest – including black spruce, white spruce and a firm mat of lichens – impinge on its usually barren terrain.

Attractions

  • The best time for viewing polar bears is October and November while the bears are moving from their summer habitat to seal-hunting territory.
  • During summer months wildflowers explode in color and shape.
  • In fall the ground is coated in scarlet bearberries, yellow willows, and white tufts of Arctic avens.
