The land was on the bottom of what are now known as New Mexico and Arizona.

Year?

Who the territory was gained from?

The 29,670 square miles was bought from Mexico.

People involved

-James Gadsden who was the American Ambassador of Mexico at the
time and signed the treaty between Mexico and the U.S.

-Later the treaty was ratified and signed by President Franklin Pierce.

-President Franklin Pierce was influenced by Jefferson Davis who saw an opportunity to provide land for the railroad and land for Mexico itself.

Overall impact of acquisition?

The Gadsden Purchase was a part of Mexico that Santa Anna gave up to the U.S. for $10 million in 1853. America bought the land because people thought that the best route for a railroad was through this part of Mexico.
