Galapagos sea lions are amazing creatures.
And this is just a little bit about them.
Sea lions are social animals. A group on land is called a colony, a group in water is called a raft, a group in breeding season is called a rookery, and a group of females in one male's territory is called a harem.
Adult male sea lions are called bulls.
Female sea lions are simply called females.
Females only give birth to one baby, called a pup, a year.
Bulls have their own territories, meaning their own personal land that they own. Bulls will fight even to the death to gain more territory and/or protect their own.
Galapagos sea lions feed mostly on sardines, a type of fish. If not, they will take various types of fish.
Sea lions can weigh up to...
550 lbs!!!
Sea lions can be up to...
250 cm long!!!
Galapagos sea lions are excellent swimmers! They use their flippers to press against the water and paddle, propelling themselves forwards, backwards, and on all sides!
Do not allow your dog to go to the Galapagos when it is ill. Sea lions are at risk from catching dog diseases which can cause them to become very ill and/or die.
Avoid encountering sea lions in El Nino events. This is the main reason why they are threatened.
Keep a steady population of sharks and orcas (killer whales). These are sea lions' main predators, and there can't be too many or none of them.
With our help, the world of sea lions will live in peace.
